  3. Instructions for testing PC hardware 
  4. running non-standard operating systems.
  5.

  7. * Note: If you use DOS or Win3.x or Win9x you DO NOT need  *
  8. * to follow these instructions. Just use Y2000.exe for DOS *
  9. * and Y2000W.exe for Win 3.x and Win9x.                    *

  11. * The following are instructions for testing PC hardware   *
  12. * that is not running one of these operating systems.      *
  13. ************************************************************

  15. Rather that develop diagnostics software to run under NT / UNIX/
  16. ZENIX/ Novell etc. we have designed a facility that allows one
  17. version of the software to test the PC hardware on any platform.
  18.  The instructions below will allow you to diagnose PC hardware
  19. WITHOUT the potential of your diagnostics disks becoming INFECTED
  20. by a virus on that hardware AND more importantly without the risk
  21. of your diagnostic disk then SPREADING that virus to other PCs
  22. that you check. 
  23.  
  24. You will need;
  25.     1. The special Alien O/S disk supplied
  26.     2. A blank floppy
  27.  
  28. Follow these steps;
  29.     1. Insert the blank floppy on a PC running DOS 6 or higher
  30.     2. Format the blank floppy with "Format a: /s" to make it a 
  31.         system disk
  32.     3. Create a config.sys on the disk that contains one line;
  33.             FILES=55
  34.     4. Remove the disk and label it as;
  35.             "DISK 1 INITIAL BOOTUP - 
  36.             KEEP WRITE PROTECTED"
  37.     5. Write protect the disk AND KEEP IT WRITE PROTECTED 
  38.         FROM NOW ONWARDS
  39.     6. Now insert the Alien O/S disk - This is already labelled for
  40.         you.
  41.     7. Make it bootable by entering "SYS A:"
  42.     8. This disk needs to be write ENABLED as the software will record
  43.         information.
  44.     9. This part is now complete - Take your 2 disks with you to perform
  45.         the test.
  46.  
  47. Diagnosing PC hardware;
  48.     1. Insert disk 1 (write protected)
  49.     2. Boot up from the floppy. You may have to enter the PC's setup
  50.         to make it boot from A: Do not continue until you have 
  51.         made the PC boot from A: if a disk is in the A: drive
  52.     3. Remove disk 1 and insert disk 2
  53.     4. Enter A:ALIEN
  54.     5. You will be asked to identify the PC - do so.
  55.     6. The software will reboot from disk 2
  56.     7. At the end of the test take out the disk and the software will
  57.         reboot again
  58.     8. IF YOU CHANGED THE SETUP TO ENABLE BOOTING FROM A:
  59.         CHANGE IT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL SETTING
  60.     9. Your results are collected on disk 2 in ONE file RESULTS.TXT
  61.     10. You can collect 100 or more sets of results on one disk
  62.     11. They are in TXT format and can be printed. 
  63.     12. When the disk is nearly full copy the A:RESULTS.TXT from the
  64.         floppy to a safe place and then delete it to start again.
