- Instructions for testing PC hardware
- running non-standard operating systems.
-
- ************************************************************
- * Note: If you use DOS or Win3.x or Win9x you DO NOT need *
- * to follow these instructions. Just use Y2000.exe for DOS *
- * and Y2000W.exe for Win 3.x and Win9x. *
- * *
- * The following are instructions for testing PC hardware *
- * that is not running one of these operating systems. *
- ************************************************************
-
- Rather that develop diagnostics software to run under NT / UNIX/
- ZENIX/ Novell etc. we have designed a facility that allows one
- version of the software to test the PC hardware on any platform.
- The instructions below will allow you to diagnose PC hardware
- WITHOUT the potential of your diagnostics disks becoming INFECTED
- by a virus on that hardware AND more importantly without the risk
- of your diagnostic disk then SPREADING that virus to other PCs
- that you check.
-
- You will need;
- 1. The special Alien O/S disk supplied
- 2. A blank floppy
-
- Follow these steps;
- 1. Insert the blank floppy on a PC running DOS 6 or higher
- 2. Format the blank floppy with "Format a: /s" to make it a
- system disk
- 3. Create a config.sys on the disk that contains one line;
- FILES=55
- 4. Remove the disk and label it as;
- "DISK 1 INITIAL BOOTUP -
- KEEP WRITE PROTECTED"
- 5. Write protect the disk AND KEEP IT WRITE PROTECTED
- FROM NOW ONWARDS
- 6. Now insert the Alien O/S disk - This is already labelled for
- you.
- 7. Make it bootable by entering "SYS A:"
- 8. This disk needs to be write ENABLED as the software will record
- information.
- 9. This part is now complete - Take your 2 disks with you to perform
- the test.
-
- Diagnosing PC hardware;
- 1. Insert disk 1 (write protected)
- 2. Boot up from the floppy. You may have to enter the PC's setup
- to make it boot from A: Do not continue until you have
- made the PC boot from A: if a disk is in the A: drive
- 3. Remove disk 1 and insert disk 2
- 4. Enter A:ALIEN
- 5. You will be asked to identify the PC - do so.
- 6. The software will reboot from disk 2
- 7. At the end of the test take out the disk and the software will
- reboot again
- 8. IF YOU CHANGED THE SETUP TO ENABLE BOOTING FROM A:
- CHANGE IT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL SETTING
- 9. Your results are collected on disk 2 in ONE file RESULTS.TXT
- 10. You can collect 100 or more sets of results on one disk
- 11. They are in TXT format and can be printed.
- 12. When the disk is nearly full copy the A:RESULTS.TXT from the
- floppy to a safe place and then delete it to start again.
